Art Book Magazine
We are very proud and pleased to present this book on the practice of collage. Firstly because it is a previously unpublished Art Book Magazine exclusive, but mostly because it is an ambitious and historic project, documenting the beautiful exhibition at the Espace de l’Art Concret in Mouans-Sartoux organized in 2012 by director and curator Fabienne Fulchéri. This catalog brings together a group of works by multiple artists from eras and countries. It outlines an original and complex relationship between Martha Rosler and Jean Arp, Raoul Hausmann and Downsbrough, Jacques Prévert and Arnaud Labelle-Rojoux, etc. It emphasizes the impertinence and the contemporary relevance of a medium already jostling conventions of fine art by questioning the value of the artist’s signature, by raising the question of ownership, of reference, of image rights. In collage, the plastic gesture is sometimes reduced to its simplest expression —a few cuts and dots of glue—, or it becomes manic and exhibits dexterous virtuosity, but the result is always surprising, disturbing; it forces the eye to adopt a different view, a different approach. Whether in photomontage or assembly, we’re still in a logic and a reflection ranging from the “copy-pasted” to the “cut-stolen.” This book presents a relevant, open selection of works, with a biography of every showcased artist and precise captions, which, thanks to a discreet interactivity, never become distracting. A reference book, to discover or deepen your understanding of an artistic practice that goes beyond mere technique.
