The Island Of Paradise
Jeu de Paume
This catalogue, published on the occasion of the exhibition by the Ultralab™ collective at the Musée du Jeu de Paume, is an unidentified editorial object that proposes its own fiction: the museum exploded on the eve of the opening, and the proposition this opus makes is to list the exhibits in the form of working documents, images of the installation process for the exhibition, works in progress, and records of intentions.
An interview with the artists exposes this manifest non-event, discusses destruction as an artistic gesture in spite of itself, and the impossibility for the pieces imagined for the exhibition of ever becoming actual “works”.
Also discussed are islands, utopias and dystopias, art as material causing a nuisance and engendering disappointment.
This volume is essential for understanding the work of the collective. The print version was barely distributed and is now sold out.
