Rhinocéros
The historiography of multiples, since the second half of the twentieth century, establishes artist multiples as a three-dimensional published object. It is associated to other multiples, i.e. bidimensional artist publications relying on means of reproduction (CD-roms, videos, posters, artist books...). In Livraison, the contributions by artists belong to that category. But despite that, many artist publications hesitate between two and three dimensionality, and use a wide variety of reproduction processes.
The artists who have been called to contribute to the present issue of Livraison adress this question: how can a work evoque, or even offer, a form of tridimensionality while acknowledging and keeping the flatness of the book-like medium that carries it? And how, as such, can it blurr the the categories of works published in that kind of media?
Twenty-four artists answered in very different ways to that issue. Didactic 2D/3D representation of space, photographic trompe l'oeuil representations, simulated openings in the field of the book, or promptings towards the actual making of a tridimensional production, all the contributions in Livraison take a part in the unfolding of bidimensional publication towards a form of multiple as an object.
